The Sega SG-1000 is Sega's first home video game console, launched in Japan on July 15, 1983. As part of the third generation of consoles, it was released alongside Nintendo's Famicom. The SG-1000 featured an 8-bit architecture and supported a library of games via interchangeable cartridges. It was also compatible with Sega's My Card format through an optional adapter. Though its limited hardware power and modest commercial success kept it in the shadow of its competitors, the SG-1000 marked Sega's entry into the home console market and laid the foundation for future systems like the Master System and Genesis.
