Release Date: 1994
"Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II" is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo, released exclusively in North America for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1994. This sequel to the original "StarTropics" game sees the return of protagonist Mike Jones, a teenage adventurer who, after receiving a strange transmission from the robotic operating buddy Mica, is thrust once more into a battle against the evil alien Zoda. Unlike its predecessor, which was heavily inspired by "The Legend of Zelda," "Zoda's Revenge" adopts a more direct action and time-travel theme, propelling Mike through nine historical epochs, from the Stone Age to the Wild West, and even featuring real historical figures like Leonardo da Vinci and Cleopatra.
"Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II" was notable for several reasons, not least of which was its timing; it was one of the last games released for the NES as the gaming world was shifting its attention to the then-new Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The gameplay transitioned from a grid-based movement system to a more fluid, free-form movement, offering players a significantly different experience from the first game in the series. The game preserved the series’ quirky sense of humor and puzzle-solving elements while incorporating a unique chapter-based storytelling approach. Although it did not achieve the same level of commercial success as other Nintendo titles of the era, it has since been appreciated for its creativity and holds a special place in the hearts of retro gaming enthusiasts.
