Description

"WWF King of the Ring" is a professional wrestling video game based on the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), released in 1993 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Developed by Gray Matter Inc. and published by LJN, it is part of the series of WWF games and was among the last wrestling games to be produced for the NES platform. In this game, players can choose from a roster of WWF superstars including Hulk Hogan, Bret "The Hitman" Hart, and the Undertaker, each with their own unique moves and attributes. The game's main objective is to compete in wrestling matches to weaken the opponent using a variety of attacks and grappling moves in order to successfully pin them for a three-count or force them to submit.

"WWF King of the Ring" offered modes such as a Championship Tournament where players strive to obtain the WWF Championship, along with a tag team championship and the titular King of the Ring tournament, which mimics the real-life annual wrestling tournament conducted by the WWF. One notable feature of the game was its more arcade-like, action-orientated gameplay, differing from the more simulation-based style found in some other wrestling games. The game also allowed for character customization, where players could create a wrestler, adjusting their strength, stamina, and weight, which added a strategic element to bouts. Despite being late in the NES lifecycle, the game carved out a specific niche, appealing to both wrestling fans and gamers looking for a direct, fun wrestling experience on a classic console.
