Description

"Widget" is an engaging side-scrolling platform video game developed for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and released in 1992. Based on the animated television series "Widget the World Watcher," the game features its eponymous character, a purple alien from the planet Widget who has taken on the task of protecting Earth's environment. The gameplay primarily revolves around Widget's ability to morph into different forms—each with unique abilities—as he battles through various levels to thwart the evil plans of his nemesis, Megabrain. These transformations include different animals and machines, such as a bird, cat, or tank, offering a variety of gameplay mechanics and strategies.

"Widget" was developed by Graphic Research and published by Atlus in the US, representing a unique entry in the NES library due to its environmental themes and transformation-based gameplay. Each level in the game follows a distinct environmental backdrop, reinforcing the show's educational message about conservation and ecology without sacrificing the entertainment value. Although the game did not receive widespread acclaim, it holds a niche appeal among fans of the television series and retro gaming enthusiasts who appreciate its quirky characters and innovative platform challenges. The ability to switch forms in response to specific obstacles presented a richer level of strategic depth that was somewhat ahead of its time for NES titles.
