Description

"War Gods" is a 3D fighting video game developed and published by Midway Games, released for the Nintendo 64 in 1996. The game revolves around a group of Earth humans who, after coming into contact with a mysterious alien ore known as "Ore", transform into powerful god-like beings with unique abilities and fighting styles. The player can choose from a roster of ten characters, each embodying a different "War God" with a unique set of moves and special attacks. The objective of the game is to defeat each opponent in combat in a series of best-two-out-of-three matches, using a combination of basic attacks and special moves unique to each character.

"War Gods" was one of the first fighting games on the N64 to utilize 3D graphics, leveraging technology similar to that used in Midway's arcade hit, "Mortal Kombat 4". This technology allowed for the integration of digitized character models and more detailed 3D environments. A significant feature at the time, it aimed to offer a new level of graphical fidelity and immersion in fighting games. Despite its technological advancements, "War Gods" received mixed reviews, with criticism often directed at its somewhat stiff controls and less-refined gameplay mechanics compared to other fighters of the era. Nonetheless, it retains a cult following among fans who appreciate its unique characters and early 3D fighting game aesthetics.
