Description

"Wally Bear and the NO! Gang" is an educational video game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1992. Developed by American Game Cartridges and published by AVE, the game features the titular character, Wally Bear, on a mission to spread anti-drug and anti-alcohol messages to young players. In the game, players control Wally Bear as he skateboards through his neighborhood, avoiding various obstacles and enemies. The goal is for Wally to gather his friends for a party at his grandparents' house, all while dispensing healthy lifestyle tips and avoiding negative influences like gangs, drugs, and alcohol. Throughout the gameplay, players encounter different members of the "NO! Gang," each of whom represents a positive role model promoting safe and responsible behaviors.

The development and release of "Wally Bear and the NO! Gang" were part of a broader initiative during the late 1980s and early 1990s to utilize video games as platforms for social education and preventative messaging concerning drugs and alcohol. The game is notable for being one of the few video games to have a direct endorsement from a U.S. governmental body, as it featured the “Parents’ Choice” seal from the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information. Although it was not commercially successful and often critiqued for its mediocre gameplay and graphics, "Wally Bear and the NO! Gang" represents an interesting experiment in the use of video games for educational and behavioral modification purposes. The game is a reflection of its time, illustrating how video game developers began to explore the medium’s potential for delivering impactful social messages beyond mere entertainment.
