"Tutankham" is an arcade game developed by Konami and released in 1982, later ported to the Atari 2600. In this fast-paced action game, players are cast in the role of an explorer navigating the maze-like tombs of an Egyptian pyramid. The objective is to traverse through different chambers to collect treasures while avoiding a variety of enemies such as snakes, bats, and dragons. The game features scrolling maze environments in two directions, right and left, which was a unique feature for games at the time. Players are equipped with a laser gun for defense and a limited supply of flash bombs to clear all enemies on the screen, adding a strategic element to the gameplay.
The port of "Tutankham" to the Atari 2600 was handled by Parker Brothers and it had to contend with the system’s limited graphical capabilities and memory. As a result, some features from the original arcade version were simplified or removed. For instance, the original arcade version's four-directional scrolling was reduced to horizontal scrolling to fit the hardware constraints. Despite these changes, the game successfully retained the core elements that made the arcade version popular. "Tutankham" is remembered for its challenging mazes and gameplay mechanics, and it stands out as an example of early 1980s arcade games making their transition to home consoles, influencing the design and complexity of future video games.
