Description

"Time Lord" is an action-adventure video game developed by Rare and published by Milton Bradley for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1990. The game is set in the year 2999, where players assume the role of the Time Lord, whose mission is to travel through various historical periods and collect powerful orbs before the alien race, the Drakkonians, can use them to conquer Earth. The game spans multiple time periods, including 1250 A.D. England, 1860 A.D. Western USA, 1650 A.D. Caribbean, and 1943 A.D. Germany. Each level is distinctive, offering a variety of enemies and challenges that reflect the era's unique setting. The gameplay involves combat, platforming, and puzzles, with a strict deadline to complete the game within a year in-game time, adding a sense of urgency.

"Time Lord" is notable for its ambitious use of multiple historical settings and its blend of different gameplay mechanics. Despite its innovative approach and the reputation of its developer, Rare, the game received mixed reactions due to its high difficulty level and complex game mechanics which were not typical of many NES games at the time. The urgency compounded by the game's real-time countdown timer contributed to its challenging nature. Time Lord showcases a blend of historical science fiction and action, and though it wasn’t a commercial success, it remains a unique and interesting title in the NES library for its attempts to push the boundaries of video game storytelling and design during the early 90s.
