Swordquest: Fireworld was the second game in Atari's Swordquest series for the Atari 2600, released in 1983. Following Earthworld, the game continued the ambitious contest that blended video gaming with treasure hunting. Inspired by the element of fire, the game’s design was loosely based on the Hindu Tree of Life, with rooms corresponding to its branches and aspects.
Like its predecessor, Fireworld featured an overhead adventure style. Players navigated rooms, collected items, and solved puzzles by referencing clues hidden within the accompanying DC Comics story. Deciphering these clues led to a series of numbers that revealed the game’s ultimate challenge.
Winners of Fireworld competed for a $25,000 Chalice of Light, a real-world prize crafted from gold and precious jewels. Despite its intriguing premise, the game was met with mixed reviews due to its obscure mechanics and puzzles. The collapse of Atari’s finances during the video game crash marked the decline of the Swordquest contest, leaving the series incomplete.
