Release Date: 1987
"Super Pitfall," released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1987, is a platforming adventure game that challenges players to navigate the treacherous depths of a mysterious cave in search of lost treasures and to rescue trapped family members. The player steps into the shoes of the adventurous Pitfall Harry, a character originally created by David Crane and made famous by the earlier Atari 2600 game "Pitfall!" In "Super Pitfall," Harry must traverse over 270 screens worth of dangerous terrain, including deadly enemies and hidden traps, to collect the necessary keys and items required to rescue his niece Rhonda and his cat Quickclaw, while also seeking out a large diamond.
"Super Pitfall" was developed by Micronics and published by Activision, marking one of the early transitions of a popular video game icon from the home computer and early console era into the burgeoning age of more graphically advanced 8-bit gaming. Unlike its predecessor, which was acclaimed for innovative game design, "Super Pitfall" received a less enthusiastic reception, criticized for its confusing level design and rudimentary graphics. Despite these setbacks, the game is notable for its early attempt at a non-linear exploration style that would later become more refined in future platform adventure games. The game allowed players to backtrack and explore, a mechanic that was not very common for games of its time, providing a precursor to the "Metroidvania" genre.
