Description

"Super 3D Noah's Ark" is an unlicensed video game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), developed by Wisdom Tree in 1994. The game stands out as the only unlicensed title released in North America for the SNES, circumventing Nintendo's strict licensing requirements by employing a unique cartridge design that piggybacked on top of an official SNES cartridge. Thematically unique, the game is a Christian-themed first-person shooter, which swaps out traditional violence for non-lethal, sleep-inducing gameplay. Players take on the role of Noah, who must traverse the ark and use a slingshot to feed the restless animals with food like fruits and grains to put them to sleep, ensuring peace and quiet across the floating menagerie.

The gameplay of "Super 3D Noah's Ark" is heavily inspired by id Software's "Wolfenstein 3D", even using the same game engine, which was licensed to Wisdom Tree for this purpose. As Noah, players explore the ark's detailed mazes spread across multiple decks, solving puzzles, collecting keys, and facing various species of animals. The mechanics focus on non-violently subduing animals by feeding them enough food until they fall asleep, replacing the typical shooter's health depletion with a sleep meter for the animals. This setup provided an alternative, non-violent twist on the then-dominant shooter genre, aligning with Wisdom Tree's Christian education objective. Despite its unconventional entry into the market and unique thematic content, the game has since gained a peculiar niche following and stands as a curious example of early '90s video game culture.
