Release Date: 1989
"Strider" is a side-scrolling platform game developed and released by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989. Based on the original arcade game, it puts players in the role of Hiryu, a futuristic ninja-like operative known as a "Strider," undertaking a mission to eliminate the evil dictator, Grandmaster Meio, who has taken over the Earth. Players traverse various levels from the Eastern European iron curtain to the futuristic cityscapes of Tokyo to accomplish the mission. The gameplay is characterized by fast action, acrobatic jumps, and the use of a plasma sword called "Cypher" which Hiryu uses to combat various robotic and human enemies.
The NES version of "Strider" is distinct from its arcade counterpart, incorporating more role-playing elements and different level designs, including an exploration component similar to Metroid. Unlike the linear progression typical in arcade versions, the NES Strider adds a degree of non-linear gameplay by requiring players to collect items and key cards to advance to different segments of the game. Additionally, it features a unique storyline and cutscenes that were quite advanced for its time, opening up layers of narrative depth to complement the action. This version of Strider was noted for its ambitious scope and is remembered for its challenging gameplay and unique adaptation of the Strider franchise's lore.
