Description

"Sqoon" is a side-scrolling shooter video game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1986. Developed by Irem, the same company known for arcade hits like "R-Type," "Sqoon" presents a unique underwater adventure where the player pilots an unconventional submarine tasked with saving the Earth. The game's plot revolves around an alien invasion that has resulted in the world's oceans being colonized by hostile extraterrestrial forces, who have also commenced abducting humans. Players navigate the submarine, Sqoon, through nine levels of underwater landscapes, battling a variety of enemies and obstacles, with the ultimate goal of rescuing human captives and thwarting the alien threat.

Gameplay in "Sqoon" is noted for its difficulty and the necessity of managing resources, a feature not commonly emphasized in shooters of its time. Players must continually collect ice blocks to maintain the submarine’s fuel supply while also managing missile and nuke weapons to combat enemies. The game stands out due to its quirky graphics and sound, typical of the mid-80s NES titles, creating a distinct feel that combines a serious save-the-world mission with a slightly whimsical underwater setting. Unique for incorporating an environmental message, "Sqoon" also challenges players with its strategic depth, requiring careful planning in addition to quick reflex actions. Despite being one of the lesser-known NES titles, "Sqoon" has a cult following among classic game enthusiasts who appreciate its blend of challenging gameplay and distinctive aesthetic.
