Description

"Space Attack" for the Atari 2600, developed and published by M-Network in 1982, is a classic video game that takes inspiration from the arcade favorite "Space Invaders." Players are thrust into the role of a spaceship commander tasked with defending their mothership against waves of attacking alien fleets. The game is played from a top-down perspective where the player controls a squadron of three ships. Unlike traditional shooters of its time, "Space Attack" introduces a strategic element by allowing players to manage multiple squadrons across different sectors of space via a radar-like map. This novel addition combines real-time action with tactical management, making it a unique offering in the genre.

The history behind "Space Attack" reveals its roots as an adaptation of the Intellivision game "Space Battle," reworked to suit the hardware limitations and controller layout of the Atari 2600. Adaptations like this were common in the early 80s due to the popularity of the Atari platform, leading to many games being reconfigured to capitalize on its massive user base. Gameplay involves switching between the radar screen to deploy squadrons and the battle screen where dogfights with alien ships occur. Despite the hardware limitations, such as the absence of color differentiation between friendly and enemy units (both appear the same color), the game was praised for requiring players to not only be quick in combat but also strategic in fleet management. "Space Attack" is remembered for its challenging gameplay and was part of the wave of space-themed shooters that defined early home console gaming.
