Description

"Sonic Chaos," also known as "Sonic & Tails" in Japan, is a platform game developed by Aspect and published by Sega for the Game Gear in 1993. It stands out as the third Sonic game for the handheld device and introduces several innovative features to the series. The game allows players to choose between Sonic the Hedgehog or Tails the Fox, each with unique abilities impacting gameplay. Sonic can perform a turbo "Super Peel Out," while Tails can fly for short periods. The game's plot revolves around Doctor Robotnik’s theft of the red Chaos Emerald causing imbalance in the rest of the Emeralds and putting the world at risk. The heroes must traverse various levels to recover the Emeralds and restore peace.

"Sonic Chaos" is notable for being one of the first handheld games in the series to incorporate elements typically reserved for Sonic games on more powerful consoles, like the Spin Dash and the ability to collect 100 rings to earn an extra life. Its level design, controls, and graphics were significantly advanced for the Game Gear, featuring vibrant, colorful stages and more extensive, intricate level designs than its predecessors on the platform. The game received positive reviews for its gameplay mechanics and was a step forward in translating the fast-paced action of Sonic’s console adventures to the portable world. This title helped to solidify Sonic's reputation as Sega's primary mascot and was integral to the ongoing popularity of the Game Gear during the competitive handheld era.
