"Smart Ball" is a side-scrolling action-adventure platform game released for the Nintendo Super NES in 1991. Developed by Game Freak and System Sacom, and published by Sony Imagesoft in North America, the game introduces players to Jerry, the titular 'Smart Ball.' Jerry was originally a human prince but was transformed into a blue slime-like creature by the wicked magician, Tom Tom. As players progress through the game, they control Jerry on his quest to traverse various environments, from lush forests to bustling villages, in an effort to reclaim his human form and thwart the evil Tom Tom's plans to marry his fiancée and usurp the throne.
Gameplay in "Smart Ball" utilizes the unique physical properties of Jerry's gelatinous body. Players can make Jerry stick to and climb walls, squeeze through narrow spaces, or use his elasticity to bounce high into the air. This innovative use of physics not only makes "Smart Ball" distinct from other platformers of the era but also adds a layer of strategy to the typical run-and-jump mechanics. The game is spread out across twelve levels, culminating in a battle against Tom Tom. Despite its charmingly simple graphics and engaging gameplay, "Smart Ball" didn’t spawn significant sequels in the West. However, it did have a Japan-exclusive sequel named "Jelly Boy 2," which continued the adventures of Jerry but never saw a release outside Japan.
