Description

"S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team" is a side-scrolling shooter game developed and published by Natsume for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1990. Set in a dystopian future where Earth is under threat from an alien invasion, players take on the role of futuristic soldiers tasked with defeating the alien force led by the malevolent entity Vile Malmort who has stationed his fortress in orbit around Earth. The game stands out for its intense action and unique character design, with players choosing between two cybernetically enhanced heroes, Arnold and Sigourney. Each character is equipped with a powerful jetpack that allows for free movement across the screen, a feature that adds a strategic layer to the traditional shooter gameplay.

S.C.A.T. is notable for its challenging gameplay and creative level design, featuring a total of five lengthy stages that culminate in boss fights which are both challenging and visually impressive. The game also utilizes a two-player mode where players can team up to take down enemies, making it a popular choice for cooperative play. The novel aspect of permanently orbiting satellites as weapons, that circle the players and provide additional firepower, innovatively adds to the gameplay complexity and depth. Despite its relatively low profile upon release, S.C.A.T. has gained a cult following over the years due to its robust gameplay mechanics, futuristic aesthetic, and catchy soundtrack, marking it as a hidden gem in the NES library.
