Description

"Robotron: 2084," originally developed by Williams Electronics in 1982, is a renowned arcade shooter that found its way to the Atari Lynx in 1991. The game is set in a dystopian future of the year 2084, where robots have risen against humans due to a mistaken directive to eradicate war, crime, and incompetence, resulting in the extermination of their human creators. Players take on the role of a super-powered humanoid striving to save the last human family. The gameplay involves maneuvering around a single screen filled with an ever-increasing number of enemies, using an innovative dual-joystick control system – one for movement and the other for firing in any direction, a setup that was groundbreaking at the time and influenced a variety of subsequent video games.

The Atari Lynx version of "Robotron: 2084" managed to capture the essence of the frantic and fast-paced action that made the arcade original a classic, despite the limitations of the handheld system. It stood out due to its faithful adaptation of both the gameplay mechanics and the vibrant, colorful graphics that echoed the arcade's charm. This version also supported cooperative play via the Lynx's Comlynx system, allowing two players to join forces in battling the robot hordes, which was a feature that added considerable value and replayability. The transition from arcade cabinet to a portable console was well-received, with the game often highlighted as one of the better classic arcade ports on the Lynx, preserving the addictive and challenging nature that defined the original Robotron experience.
