Release Date: 1995
"Robotica," also known as "Robotica: Cybernation Revolt" in Europe, is a first-person shooter game developed for the Sega Saturn, which was released in 1995. Set within a futuristic environment, the game unfolds on a space station known as the Daedalus, where a robot revolution against humans has erupted. Players take on the role of a humanoid cyborg and navigate through the maze-like corridors of the station. The main objective is to defeat rogue robots and ultimately regain control of the station. As players progress, they can upgrade their weapons and defenses by hacking into computer terminals, adding a strategic layer to the fast-paced combat.
Developed by Micronet, one of the early developers for the Sega Saturn, "Robotica" was notable for being one of the first titles to explore the potential of 3D environments on the platform. The use of a first-person perspective was relatively innovative at the time, providing players with an immersive experience of the game’s sci-fi themed corridors and robotic enemies. Despite the limitations in graphics, typical of early Saturn games, "Robotica" managed to captivate players with its intense gameplay and challenging levels. The game also included features like a mini-map to assist with navigation, which was crucial in the complex layout of the Daedalus space station. Although it might not have achieved the legendary status of other contemporary first-person shooters, "Robotica" still holds a place as a pioneering game in the early days of 3D console gaming.
