R.B.I. Baseball 3 is a classic baseball video game released in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Developed by Atari Games and published by Tengen, it is the third installment in the R.B.I. Baseball series, which was renowned for being one of the first video games to have licensed Major League Baseball teams and players. Unlike many other baseball games of its time, R.B.I. Baseball 3 sought to provide a more realistic simulation of the sport by featuring actual MLB team rosters from the 1990 and 1991 seasons, as well as rosters from the 1986, 1987, and 1988 seasons, allowing players to simulate classic matchups.
The gameplay in R.B.I. Baseball 3 was praised for its depth and strategic elements. Players could choose from all 26 MLB teams from the time, complete with authentic player statistics and abilities. The game featured multiple gameplay modes including Exhibition, Playoff, and a full 162-game season mode, which added considerable replay value. One significant advancement in this third installment was the improvement in graphics and player animations, offering a more engaging visual experience compared to its predecessors. The controls were straightforward yet allowed enough complexity for players to execute a variety of pitches, batting tactics, and defensive plays, making it accessible yet challenging, and capturing the essence of America's favorite pastime in digital form.
