Description

"Rampage" is a classic arcade game that was adapted for the Atari 2600/VCS, offering a unique take on the monster movie genre in video game form. In the game, players take on the roles of gigantic monsters with the singular goal of wreaking havoc on cityscapes. The player can choose between three monstrous characters: George, a King Kong-like giant gorilla; Lizzie, a gargantuan lizard reminiscent of Godzilla; and Ralph, a massive werewolf. The gameplay focuses on climbing and demolishing buildings while avoiding attacks by military forces, including tanks and helicopters. Each level represents a different city, and players must destroy every building in order to advance to the next level. The game's simplicity combined with its destructive premise provides a thrilling arcade experience.

The Atari 2600 version of "Rampage" was released in 1989, marking one of the later titles for the console as the video game industry began transitioning to more advanced systems. Despite the technical limitations of the Atari 2600, which restricted graphics and sound capabilities, the game managed to capture the essential elements that made the arcade original popular. Notably, due to memory constraints, the Atari 2600 version only features two of the original three monsters — George and Lizzie. "Rampage" stood out for its fun, cooperative gameplay, allowing two players to simultaneously cause destruction, which was a relatively novel feature at the time. The game's ability to let players indulge in their city-crushing fantasies contributed to its enduring popularity and influence in the genre of arcade-style destruction games.
