Description

"Pro Wrestling" is a sports simulation video game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1987, developed by Nintendo R&D3 and published by Nintendo. The game immerses players in the action-packed world of professional wrestling, offering a straightforward yet addictive gameplay experience characteristic of early NES games. Players select from a roster of six distinctive wrestlers, each with their own unique moves and attacks, which include Fighter Hayabusa, Star Man, Kin Corn Karn, Giant Panther, The Amazon, and King Slender. The objective is to compete through a series of matches in pursuit of the VWA (Video Wrestling Association) championship belt, culminating in a final match against the reigning champion, Great Puma, once all other opponents have been defeated.

"Pro Wrestling" was notable for its time due to its varied character selection and the depth of its combat system, which allowed for different fighting styles and strategies. Players could perform a range of moves such as body slams, dropkicks, backbreakers, and flying off the turnbuckles, depending on their chosen wrestler. The game is fondly remembered for its iconic phrase, "A winner is you," which is displayed upon securing a championship victory—a phrase that has since become an internet meme representing early video game translations. Although not the first wrestling game for the NES, its engaging gameplay and character diversity set it apart, making it a beloved classic in the sports game genre for the console.
