Description

"Primal Rage" is a unique fighting game developed by Atari Games and released for the Sega Saturn in 1995. Set in a post-apocalyptic version of Earth called "Urth," the game features seven large beasts that are reminiscent of dinosaurs and giant apes, each embodying one of the seven deadly sins. Players select a creature and fight against the others to dominate this new world, using a combination of special moves and attacks that are executed through an array of button combinations and joystick movements. Unlike traditional fighting games that feature humanoid characters, "Primal Rage" allows these colossal monsters to battle it out across various landscapes, giving the gameplay a distinct and dynamic feel.

The game stands out not only for its character design and setting but also for its use of stop-motion animation techniques, which were quite advanced for the time. This choice of technology contributed to the fluidity and realism of the characters' movements, making "Primal Rage" a technologically innovative game within the fighting genre. Initially released in arcades before moving to home consoles like the Sega Saturn, it gained a cult following due to its unique style and gameplay mechanics, which included the ability to summon followers and perform "fatalities" similar to those in "Mortal Kombat." Despite controversies regarding its violent content and religious undertones, "Primal Rage" remains a memorable title for its creative approach to the fighting game format.
