Release Date: 1993
"Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods" is a strategic god game developed by Bullfrog Productions and constitutes a sequel to the original game "Populous." While the original title was innovative for its time, introducing players to a genre where they could play as a deity influencing a world, the sequel expands on this concept with enhanced features, graphics, and complexity. In "Populous II," players take on the role of a demigod, a child of Zeus, with the ultimate goal of rising through the pantheon of Greek mythology to challenge the gods themselves. Set across a series of levels each based on Greek mythological themes, players use their divine powers to lead their followers, influencing terrain, conjuring natural disasters, and engaging in battles against opposing deities' followers.
Significant for its time, "Populous II" introduced a more refined user interface and deeper gameplay mechanics compared to its predecessor. The game includes over 1000 different levels and a variety of magical abilities categorized into four domains: earth, air, fire, and water, each with unique effects and strategic uses. The dynamics of the game require careful management of mana, which serves as the resource for powers. Not only does the game require strategic planning in terms of physical landscape alteration and follower management, but players also need to align their actions with the strengths and weaknesses of their chosen deity. Although primarily released for Amiga and MS-DOS, its adaptation to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) meant bringing its complex, engaging gameplay to a wider console audience, continuing to define and elevate the god game genre during the early 90s.
