Description

"Plok" is a vibrant, side-scrolling platformer released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, developed by Software Creations and published by Tradewest. The game is known for its quirky protagonist, Plok, who is a colorful character on a quest to reclaim the lost flags of his homeland, Akrillic, part of the fictional Poly-Esta archipelago. The gameplay of "Plok" is distinguished by its unique mechanic where Plok can fire his limbs as projectiles at enemies. This ability not only serves as a means of attack but also puzzles solving, since his limbs can trigger distant switches or platforms. However, losing his limbs makes him vulnerable, as he cannot jump as far without his legs, adding a strategic layer to the overall gameplay.

The game was designed by the Pickford Brothers, John and Ste Pickford, who were influential British game designers at the time. "Plok" was initially conceptualized for the Nintendo Entertainment System, but later shifted to the more powerful Super NES, allowing for more detailed graphics and a richer soundtrack composed by Tim and Geoff Follin. These composers are renowned for their ability to coax complex, memorable music from limited hardware. Although "Plok" did not achieve major commercial success, it gained a cult following due to its challenging gameplay, distinctive music, and its cartoon-like aesthetic that differentiated it from many other platformers of its era. The game’s legacy continues to be appreciated by retro gaming enthusiasts, admired for its creativity and technical accomplishments on the Super NES platform.
