Release Date: 1994
"Night Trap," originally released for the Sega CD platform in 1992, later found a place on the Panasonic 3DO system in 1994. This controversial full-motion video (FMV) game pioneers the use of live-action footage in video games, a novel concept at the time. Players assume the role of a special agent tasked with monitoring surveillance cameras in a suburban home to protect a group of unsuspecting teenagers from a band of vampires known as Augers. The gameplay revolves around watching different cameras and triggering traps to capture these intruders without alerting them to your presence.
The release of "Night Trap" marked a significant moment in video game history due to its part in the 1993 U.S. Senate hearings on video game violence. Critics argued that the game, with its voyeuristic themes and perceived violence towards women, epitomized the moral dangers of increasingly realistic video games. This controversy led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) which today still evaluates and rates video games based on their content. Despite the controversy—or perhaps because of it—"Night Trap" has attained a cult status among gamers, and its innovative use of FMV laid groundwork for more cinematic experiences in gaming.
