Description

"Millipede" is an arcade-style shooter video game, and a sequel to the highly acclaimed "Centipede," developed and published by Atari. Initially released as an arcade game in 1982, "Millipede" was subsequently ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) among other platforms. The gameplay in "Millipede" builds upon the mechanics of its predecessor "Centipede," but introduces more complex levels and enhanced graphics. The player's goal is to protect a mushroom garden from an onslaught of bugs including the titular millipede, spiders, bees, and earwigs, each with unique movements and attack patterns. Players control a small ship, known as the "Archer," that can move horizontally at the bottom of the screen and shoot projectiles upwards to destroy the bugs and the mushrooms they hide behind.

Notably, "Millipede" adds new features to the formula introduced in "Centipede," such as DDT bombs that can clear a large section of the playfield when hit by the player’s projectile. This addition, along with numerous enemy variations, allowed for more strategic gameplay and a faster-paced challenge. Various elements such as changing bug attack patterns and the introduction of flowers which could alter the movement of the millipede enhanced the game's depth and complexity. The game was well-received for its challenging arcade-style gameplay and was popular among fans of the genre. "Millipede" holds a nostalgic value and is regarded as a classic in the arcade shooting genre, cherished by those who appreciate the twitch-based shooter mechanics of early arcade games.
