Release Date: 1995
"Mega Man 7," released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1995, is a platformer developed by Capcom as a continuation of the beloved Mega Man series. Following the ongoing saga of the titular character, Mega Man, the game kicks off directly after the events of Mega Man 6, with the hero needing to once again stop the villainous Dr. Wily. Dr. Wily, who was supposedly captured and imprisoned after his last defeat, has triggered a backup plan, activating four hidden robots to commence his escape and reignite his global domination plans. Players control Mega Man as he tries to thwart Wily and his reassembled army of Robot Masters. The gameplay remains true to the series' roots, focusing on jumping, shooting, and acquiring new weapons by defeating bosses in a non-linear level selection layout.
A significant aspect of "Mega Man 7" is its notable shift in graphics, taking advantage of the SNES's capabilities to offer more detailed and colorful sprites compared to its predecessors on the NES. This installment also introduces a blend of old and new by bringing back familiar faces like Dr. Light and Roll, while introducing new characters such as Auto and Bass, Mega Man’s rival. Unique to this title is the introduction of a shop system where players can use collected bolts as currency to purchase items and weapon upgrades, adding a layer of strategic depth to the power management. Despite being the only main series Mega Man game released on the SNES, "Mega Man 7" stands out for adding these fresh elements while faithfully maintaining the series’ challenging gameplay and intricate level design that fans had come to love.
