Release Date: 1997
"Maximum Force" is an on-rails light gun arcade game developed by Mesa Logic and published by Atari Games in 1997. It was subsequently ported to the Sega Saturn among other consoles, allowing players to bring the arcade gunplay experience into the comfort of their living rooms. The game puts players in the role of counter-terrorist agents tasked with eliminating terrorist threats across various locations, including South America, the Middle East, and the United States. Players use light guns (or controllers, depending on the gaming setup) to target and neutralize enemy forces while avoiding harming civilians. The gameplay is fast-paced, requiring quick reflexes and sharp shooting accuracy to progress through the levels.
"Maximum Force" is noted for its digitized graphics, which were quite popular in the 90s, featuring backgrounds and characters captured from live-action footage. This technology was similar to that used in another game by the same developers, "Area 51", enhancing the realism of the shootouts although sometimes at the expense of graphic clarity. The Sega Saturn version included additional features such as cooperative gameplay, allowing two players to tackle the missions together. Despite its arcade roots, the transition to home consoles was well-received, with particular praise for its faithful arcade reproduction and the added home-console exclusive features. The game's emphasis on accuracy and its penalty system for harming innocents add a layer of challenge that requires players to shoot carefully rather than spraying bullets indiscriminately.
