Description

"Kabobber" is an unreleased action video game that was developed for the Atari 2600 console. The game features a unique gameplay mechanic where players control a herd of "Beasties" attempting to avoid and ultimately consume a group of antagonistic "Blobs" that roam the playing field. The primary objective is to guide your Beasties around the screen, dodging the enemy Blobs while aiming to engulf them and thus increase your score. The challenge increases as more Blobs appear, and the dynamics of the playfield evolve, requiring quick reflexes and strategic thinking to progress through the levels and achieve high scores.

Developed by Rex Bradford in the early 1980s, "Kabobber" never saw a commercial release during its initial development phase. The reasons behind its shelving remain part of the myriad mysteries typical of the video game industry in that era—ranging from fluxes in market demand to the famed video game crash of 1983. However, prototypes of "Kabobber" have been discovered and circulated among classic game collectors, offering a glimpse into what might have been a unique addition to the Atari library. This title is a significant curiosity in the realm of cancelled games, appreciated today for its inventive concept and the nostalgic appeal of Atari-era graphics and gameplay.
