Description

"Joust" is an iconic arcade game developed by Williams Electronics, which was later adapted for the Atari Lynx hand-held console. In this engaging game, players assume the role of a knight mounted on a flying ostrich, participating in jousts against enemy knights who ride buzzards. The objective of the game is to defeat these opponents by colliding with them at a higher altitude. As players progress through levels, the gameplay becomes more challenging, introducing more adversaries and obstacles. The game features a unique cooperative 2-player mode where players can either assist each other or compete for the highest score. The minimalist controls—simply moving left, right, and a button to flap the ostrich’s wings—contribute to its straightforward but addictive gameplay.

Upon its release, "Joust" quickly became acclaimed for its inventive mechanics and multiplayer aspects, qualities uncommon in games at the time of its initial arcade release in 1982. Its translation to the Atari Lynx in 1991 allowed a new generation of gamers to experience its unique gameplay on a portable system. Even though the Lynx version had to adapt the arcade’s visuals and mechanics to the constraints of the smaller, less powerful platform, it managed to retain much of the original’s charm and engagement. "Joust" on the Lynx stands out not only as a nostalgic piece from the golden age of arcades but also as a testament to the enduring appeal of well-designed game mechanics.
