Release Date: 1994
"Journey from Darkness: Strider Returns" is a side-scrolling action platformer game for the Sega Game Gear, released in 1992. It serves as a sequel to the original "Strider" arcade game, but was developed by U.S. Gold and Tiertex instead of Capcom, the creators of the original series. In this installment, players control a new protagonist, Hinjo, although he bears a great resemblance to the original Strider Hiryu. The narrative takes place in a dystopian future where Hinjo must rescue Princess Lexia from an alien invader, Grandmaster Meio. With agile movements and a versatile weapon called "Cypher," players navigate through various levels spanning from cities to wilderness, battling enemies and overcoming environmental challenges.
Gameplay in "Journey from Darkness: Strider Returns" features a mix of combat and platforming elements, with the iconic scaling jumps and acrobatic maneuvers that define the Strider franchise. However, it introduces additional items like shuriken and bombs to aid in combat. The game was generally viewed as a less polished experience compared to the original, partly due to its relatively clunky controls and lack of the smooth animation that made the first game a classic. Despite this, "Strider Returns" managed to gain attention for its ambitious attempt to continue a beloved franchise on a portable platform, offering fans an action-packed, albeit flawed, adventure in the palm of their hands.
