Description

"Gravitar" is an arcade-style shooter game developed and released by Atari, Inc. for the Atari 2600 / VCS console. Originally released in arcades in 1982 and subsequently ported to the Atari 2600 in 1983, Gravitar features a unique blend of space flight simulation and shooting mechanics, setting it apart from other games of the era. Players command a small spaceship, navigating through different solar systems, each containing a host of planets and enemy bases. The primary objective is to destroy enemy bunkers using the ship's gun and to collect blue fuel tanks by using a tractor beam, all while battling the pull of the planet's gravity, which significantly influences the ship's movement and requires a degree of skill to manage.

Gravitar's gameplay is notoriously challenging due to its gravity mechanics and the necessity to navigate through narrow tunnels to destroy enemy bases, adding a strategic layer not commonly found in shoot-em-up games. The game starts with the player's ship in a solar system overview, where selecting a planet zooms in for a closer, more dangerous encounter. Each solar system has its own gravitational pull, and some contain invisible gravitational fields, making navigation increasingly difficult as the game progresses. Notably, Gravitar was less commercially successful compared to other contemporary arcade games from Atari, believed due to its high difficulty level. Nonetheless, it has gained a cult following among classic game enthusiasts for its complexity and rewarding gameplay experience.
