Description

"G-LOC: Air Battle" is a combat flight simulator game released by Sega in 1991 for its portable Game Gear console. The game is an extension of Sega’s illustrious line of arcade-style flight games, following the popularity of titles like "After Burner". "G-LOC" stands for “G-force induced Loss Of Consciousness,” and the game puts players in the cockpit of a fighter jet, challenging them to complete various aerial combat missions. The primary objective is to shoot down enemy aircraft using machine guns and missiles, all while maneuvering the skies at breakneck speeds. The game is renowned for its fast-paced action and its ability to bring intense dogfighting scenarios to the small screen of the Game Gear, offering a level of immersion that was notable for portable gaming at the time.

The Game Gear version of "G-LOC: Air Battle" was adapted from the earlier arcade version, which was famous for its hydraulic-powered cabinet that moved according to the player’s control inputs, mimicking the motion of a real jet. Although the Game Gear could not replicate this physical experience, the game was praised for preserving the core gameplay and high-speed aerial maneuvers. It utilized the handheld’s color screen and graphical capabilities to deliver a visually appealing experience. The game allows players to experience various levels, each with increased difficulty and different enemy types. "G-LOC: Air Battle" on the Game Gear is fondly remembered for its engaging gameplay and as a technical achievement in bringing arcade-quality action to a handheld device during the early 90s.
