Release Date: 1989
"Friday the 13th" for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is a survival horror game based on the popular horror film franchise of the same name. Released in 1989 and developed by Atlus and published by LJN, this game challenges players to survive the deadly attacks of the infamous Jason Voorhees over a span of three in-game days. Players must navigate the eerie campgrounds of Camp Crystal Lake, which includes a series of cabins and caves, played out through an overhead view as well as side-scrolling segments inside buildings. The main objective is to protect the campers and defeat Jason, who can appear randomly to attack the player or one of the other counselors.
In gameplay, players can control six different counselors, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, adding a layer of strategy in choosing the best character for certain tasks. The game is notorious for its difficulty, as Jason's attacks can quickly deplete a player’s health, and finding his hidden lair in the game’s expansive map presents a serious challenge. A notable feature is the “fear meter” that increases as counselors encounter dangerous situations or find the bodies of other victims, heightening the tension of the game. "Friday the 13th" was generally met with mixed reviews upon release, largely due to its confusing layout and abrupt jump scares, but it has since gained a cult following among retro gaming enthusiasts who appreciate its challenging gameplay and early use of horror themes in video games.
