"Doom" for the Panasonic 3DO, one of the iconic first-person shooter games, was originally developed by id Software and later ported to the 3DO in 1996. The game thrusts players into the role of a lone space marine, popularly known as Doomguy, who battles hordes of demonic creatures unleashed from Hell. Set on the moons of Mars, players traverse through various levels, utilizing an arsenal ranging from simple pistols to powerful rocket launchers to confront their unearthly foes. The primary objective revolves around simple navigation through levels and puzzle-solving, spiced with intense combat scenarios.
The 3DO version of "Doom," however, is notably distinct in its execution when compared to its more famous PC counterpart. This version was single-handedly ported by Rebecca Heineman under the company Art Data Interactive, which resulted in several changes, primarily due to time constraints and the console's hardware limitations. With a significantly lower frame rate and altered graphics, the gameplay experience differed, offering challenges unique to this version. Despite these limitations, it featured an entirely new soundtrack and provided one of the early home console adaptations of the 3D shooter that had a significant influence on the genre. This release allowed 3DO players to experience the excitement and action of "Doom," albeit with some compromises.
