Release Date: 1989
"Dig Dug II: Trouble in Paradise," released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1986, is a sequel to the original arcade hit "Dig Dug." Developed by Namco, this title takes a fresh twist on the gameplay and setting of its predecessor, opting for a tropical island environment rather than underground tunnels. In "Dig Dug II," players control the character known as Dig Dug, whose mission is to protect these islands from a horde of subterranean monsters, including the familiar Pookas and fire-breathing Fygars. Unlike the first game where the player dug tunnels, this installment introduces a novel mechanic where Dig Dug inflates his enemies with an air pump or uses a jackhammer to cut out chunks of the island, sending any enemies standing on those sections into the sea.
The strategic elements of "Dig Dug II" involve more surface-level puzzle solving compared to the burrowing tactics of the original game. By using two kinds of stakes, regular and strong, players can cut lines across the island's fault lines. Correct placement and timing can eliminate multiple enemies at once, significantly ramping up the game's challenge and requiring thoughtful planning. The game did not achieve the same level of fame as its predecessor but is remembered fondly for its creative gameplay changes and the further adventures of its hero. Being a part of Namco's classic lineup, "Dig Dug II" maintains a nostalgic charm and remains a unique chapter in the company's storied arcade history, representing an innovative evolution from the tunnel-digging mechanics that defined the original game’s appeal.
