Description

"Demon Attack" is a visually captivating shooter game developed by Rob Fulop and published by Imagic for the Atari 2600/VCS console in 1982. In the game, players control a laser cannon positioned at the bottom of the screen, tasked with defending against waves of descending demons. The game is set against the backdrop of a planetary surface, enhancing the aesthetic of a space-themed defense. Each wave introduces demons that vary in appearance and attack patterns, progressively increasing in difficulty. Players use the joystick to move the cannon left and right, firing lasers to destroy the attackers. The goal is to survive as many waves as possible, earning points for each demon destroyed. Notably, the game features richly detailed graphics and colorful enemy sprites, which were quite impressive for the era and the hardware of the Atari 2600.

The origins and development of "Demon Attack" are an interesting part of its history. The game is often thought of as inspired by the classic arcade title "Phoenix," due to similarities in gameplay and enemy patterns. However, "Demon Attack" stood out due to its unique graphics and robust game mechanics. It quickly became one of Imagic's best-selling titles, praised for its challenging gameplay and replayability. The game also saw releases on other platforms, including the Intellivision, Commodore 64, and VIC-20, each version making slight adjustments to take advantage of the different hardware capabilities. Despite being embroiled in a lawsuit with Atari alleging that Imagic had infringed on Atari's exclusive rights to create games similar to "Phoenix," "Demon Attack" remains a beloved classic in the Atari 2600 library, demonstrating the era's push towards more graphically advanced and engaging video games.
