Description

"Deep Fear" is a survival horror video game released for the Sega Saturn in 1998. Developed by Sega AM7 and produced by Rikiya Nakagawa, the game is noteworthy for being one of the last notable releases for the Sega Saturn. Set in an underwater research facility known as "The Big Table," players assume the role of John Mayor, an ex-Navy SEAL now working for the Emergency Rescue Service. As the story unfolds, a mysterious capsule retrieved from space triggers a series of events that lead to the infection and mutation of the base's personnel and marine life. Players must navigate the claustrophobic corridors of the submerged facility, battling these mutations and solving puzzles, all while managing a depleting oxygen supply that adds a unique layer of tension to the gameplay.

The gameplay mechanics in "Deep Fear" are reminiscent of the early "Resident Evil" titles, with fixed camera angles, tank controls, and an emphasis on ammo conservation and item management. Unique to "Deep Fear" is its oxygen system; different areas of the base have varying levels of air quality, and players must restore the oxygen supply to prevent John from suffocating. This mechanic requires players to frequently monitor and manage their environment, enhancing the game’s tension. Despite being overshadowed by other games in the genre, "Deep Fear" received moderate praise for its innovative features and holds a special place as a cult classic among fans of survival horror games. Its status as one of the Saturn's final games in North America also marks it as a historical footnote in the lifespan of the console.
