Description

"Contra Force" is a side-scrolling action game developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1992. Unlike its predecessors in the Contra series, which focused on a straightforward alien-blasting narrative, Contra Force introduces a new plot centered around a special task force called the "Contra Force," aiming to take down an organized crime group in a near-future setting. The game offers players a choice of four characters—Burns, Smith, Iron, and Beans—each with unique weapons and abilities. The gameplay diverges from the traditional run-and-gun style of previous Contra games, incorporating elements of strategy and character selection that influence the approach to each of the game's stages.

"Contra Force" was originally intended to be a completely different game titled "Arc Hound," which was not part of the Contra series but was rebranded for its North American release. Despite this shift, it did not see a release in Japan. The game distinguishes itself from its series counterparts by offering a two-player cooperative mode and also a team mode, where players can switch between characters during play. Each character carries two different types of guns and can collect power-ups, adding depth to the gameplay. However, possibly due to its deviation from the core Contra mechanics and its comparatively late release in the NES lifecycle, "Contra Force" did not receive as much acclaim as its predecessors and is often noted for its higher difficulty level and slower gameplay, attributed partly to technical limitations that result in noticeable slowdown when multiple sprites are on the screen.
