"Brain Dead 13" is an interactive animated adventure game, which was released in 1995 for multiple platforms, including the Panasonic 3DO. Developed and published by ReadySoft, the game follows the story of Lance, a young computer technician who is called to fix a computer at a spooky old house. Upon arrival, Lance discovers the house is actually the lair of an evil scientist named Dr. Nero Neurosis and his manic assistant Fritz. After accidentally triggering the endgame of Dr. Neurosis’s diabolical scheme, Lance finds himself on the run through the castle, needing to evade traps and outsmart the castle's bizarre inhabitants to survive and stop the mad scientist's plan.
Like other games of its time such as "Dragon's Lair" and "Space Ace," "Brain Dead 13" uses a full-motion video (FMV) style, presenting the gameplay as an interactive movie where players must make quick decisions to guide Lance through the perils he encounters. The game is renowned for its richly detailed, hand-animated visuals and eccentric, humorous characters. Notably, "Brain Dead 13" features non-linear gameplay, giving players multiple paths to explore through the castle's twisted and trap-filled environment. This design choice adds significant replay value, challenging players to find all the possible outcomes and secrets scattered throughout the game. Despite its straightforward plot, the vivid animations and gory but comedic deaths combine to create a unique and memorable experience on the 3DO platform.
