Description

"Batman Returns" for the Atari Lynx is an action-packed video game based on the 1992 film of the same name, directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as Batman. In this handheld adaptation, players take on the role of the Dark Knight as he battles against the malevolent Penguin and Catwoman, who are wreaking havoc in Gotham City. The game features side-scrolling platform sequences where Batman must use a mix of combat techniques and gadgets, including the iconic Batarang, to defeat his enemies. Additional challenges come in the form of various obstacles and puzzles that players must navigate or solve in order to progress through the levels, adding depth and variety to the gameplay experience.

Developed by Atari themselves, "Batman Returns" on the Lynx sought to capitalize on the popularity of both the Batman franchise and the film upon which it was based. Released during an era when movie tie-in games were particularly popular, it stood out due to the capabilities of the Lynx console—particularly its full-color backlit screen and powerful hardware that delivered superior graphics and sound for a handheld device of that time. As a result, the game not only captured the dark, atmospheric feel of the movie but also showed off what the Atari Lynx could do in terms of delivering an engaging and immersive portable gaming experience. Despite being on a less commercially successful platform, "Batman Returns" garnered attention for its fidelity to the film's aesthetic and its challenging gameplay, making it a noteworthy title among the Lynx's library.
