Description

"Arcana" is a classic role-playing video game developed by HAL Laboratory and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1992. Set in the mystical world of Elemen, players embark on a quest to prevent the resurrection of an evil sorceress named Rimsala. The game follows the journey of a young card master named Rooks, who, along with a band of allies, traverses through dungeons, battles various foes, and solves puzzles to thwart the dark plots threatening the realm. Unique to "Arcana" is its card-based theme, where all characters, including enemies and summons, are represented as cards, adding a distinctive flair to the traditional RPG elements like turn-based combat and character progression.

Gameplay in "Arcana" is noted for its first-person dungeon crawling perspective, similar to the "Wizardry" and "Might and Magic" series, which was quite innovative for its time on the SNES platform. This perspective, combined with 2D sprite-based graphics, immerses players deeply into its dungeon environments, enhancing the exploration and combat experiences. One of the notable gameplay features is the card deck system, where players collect and utilize cards for summoning creatures during battles, each with unique abilities and attributes. Despite being somewhat overshadowed by more mainstream RPGs of its time, "Arcana" remains a cult classic, appreciated for its unique artistic style and engaging gameplay mechanics, holding a special place in the hearts of retro gaming enthusiasts.
