"AirCars" is a combat simulation video game released for the Atari Jaguar console in 1995. Developed by MidNite Entertainment Group and published by ICD, the game thrusts players into a post-apocalyptic world where they control an air car, a hovercraft-like vehicle armed with a variety of weapons. The primary objective is to navigate through various levels, engaging in battles against enemy air cars and ground-based defenses to complete specific mission objectives. The game is set in expansive, maze-like environments that challenge players to explore, locate enemy forces, and eliminate them, while managing resources such as ammunition and fuel.
The game is notable for its attempt at implementing a multiplayer feature over a network, an ambitious goal given the hardware limitations and connectivity standards of the time. "AirCars" was initially supposed to support the Jaguar's planned, but never released, "CatBox" accessory which would have facilitated network play. Despite these ambitious features, the game faced several setbacks and a limited release, initially only available through direct orders from ICD. It later saw a larger scale release under the publisher Telegames. While it didn't receive widespread acclaim, the game holds a place in the Jaguar library as a example of early attempts at networked multiplayer gaming on home consoles.
