Description

"Aaahh!!! Real Monsters" is a platform video game developed by Realtime Associates and published by Viacom New Media in 1995, based on the popular Nickelodeon animated series of the same name. Released for the Sega MegaDrive, the game plunges players into the quirky and spooky world of the Monster Academy where the main protagonists Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm attend school. These three young monsters have to navigate through various levels set in locations like the sewer, the city, and a construction site, overcoming obstacles and adversaries by using their unique scare abilities to protect themselves and collect items that boost their grades at the academy.

The game is notable for its multi-character gameplay, where players can switch between Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm at any time during play, each boasting unique powers that aid in solving puzzles and defeating enemies. For instance, Ickis can grow temporarily, allowing him to scare off bigger threats, while Krumm can throw his eyeballs in a boomerang fashion, useful for hitting switches and enemies from a distance. "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters" incorporates traditional 2D platform mechanics and sprite-based graphics that faithfully recreate the TV show's distinctive art style. This tie-in was part of a wider trend in the 90s of adapting popular children's television programs into video games, aiming to leverage their existing young audiences to expand into interactive media.
